Internet Safety for Kids
Remember when you were a kid and the Encyclopedia Britannica was the best game in town
for fast, accurate information? Today, those leather bound tomes are no more! Last year, the publishers decided to cease print production after 244 years to focus entirely on their digital encyclopedia. In this brave new world, the raw material for your child’s next A+ report is just an Internet search away.
The web is a tremendous learning tool, and while we shouldn’t allow its dangers to prevent us from embracing today’s information technology, you no doubt want your children sticking to age-appropriate websites and avoiding predators. You may also choose to restrict certain types of websites—most Internet service providers make it easy to restrict access to adult sites and chat rooms.
Of course, as a conscientious parent you know that the most important component of any safety plan is to talk to your children on a regular basis. An open line of communication gives you a window into your kids’ online habits. Children are highly impressionable, so make sure they know that they can’t believe everything they read online—and when they have questions, they should come straight to you!
