According to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics, 7% of households (about 8.6 million) across the nation experienced some form of identity theft last year. While you can’t entirely inoculate yourself from potential identity theft unless you drop off the grid and become a mountaineer, the following tips from the major credit bureaus (TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax) may help reduce the risk.
Shred It: Purchase an inexpensive shredder and shred all sensitive documents before you toss them out.
Note Billing Cycles: If a credit card bill doesn’t arrive on time, contact the company immediately. A missing bill could mean that a criminal changed the billing address.
Monitor Your Credit: Check your credit report on a regular basis to make sure nothing looks suspicious.
Fraud Alerts: All three credit bureaus allow you to place fraud alerts on your credit card if you
suspect illegal activity. You only need to call one of them—they will share your information with the others.
