The season for pool parties and barbecues has arrived, and keeping your pool in proper working order is essential. The following tips may help you maintain your backyard oasis throughout the summer months and beyond.
Find and Repair Leaks: HowStuffWorks.com recommends a clever and inexpensive method for discovering pool leaks. Fill a plastic bucket with water up to three-quarters of its capacity. Mark the water levels of both the bucket and the pool, and float the bucket in the pool for a few days. If the pool loses water faster than the bucket (i.e., quicker than the evaporation rate), you’ve got a leak.
Skim Regularly: Use a leaf skimmer to keep debris from sinking to the bottom, where it will be harder to clean.
Regular Heater Maintenance: Follow the regular maintenance schedule set by your heater’s manufacturer to help avoid costly repairs. Occasionally, calcium buildup can restrict water flow. If this happens, the heater may need to be disassembled and cleaned—so your best bet is to hire a professional.
Maintain Normal pH: Use a kit to test your water’s pH level—somewhere between 7.2 and 7.8 is ideal.
